Boat Lift Maintenance & Inspections

Most lift failures start as something small: a frayed cable, low gearbox oil, a corroded switch. A yearly service catches them before the boat is stuck. Get matched with a local lift tech.

  • Yearly service visits
  • Post-storm inspections
  • Bunks and canopies

Maintenance Plans: what it involves

Boat lifts in salt water need regular attention. A maintenance visit goes through the whole lift: cables and pulleys for broken strands and wear, gearbox oil and seals, motor mounts and covers, switch box and remote, limit switch, bunks and bunk carpet, cradle bolts, beams and canopy. Small parts that are worn get replaced at the visit, and anything bigger is priced for you to decide on.

Two times of year matter most in Southwest Florida. Before storm season, a check makes sure the lift can raise the boat high and hold it securely if a storm threatens. After a storm, lifts that sat in surge water need their motors, gearboxes and switches checked before they're run again, because salt water inside a motor or switch box can cause damage that shows up weeks later.

Good times to book a service

  • It's been a year or more since anyone checked the lift
  • Before hurricane season starts in June
  • After any storm that put water over the dock
  • Bunk carpet is torn or the boat sits off-center
  • The canopy cover is torn or faded

Book before storm season, when lift techs' schedules fill up.

Common methods

Annual service

Cables, pulleys, gearbox oil, motor and switch box are checked and serviced, and worn small parts are replaced.

Post-storm inspection

Lifts that took surge or wind are checked for flooded motors and switches, bent beams and loose pilings before use.

Bunks and canopies

Bunk boards and carpet are replaced and canopy covers or frames are repaired or replaced.

Does maintenance need a permit?

No. Routine maintenance, replacing bunk boards or carpet and replacing a canopy cover on an existing frame are not permitted work. New canopy frames and anything structural can be different: some places limit canopy size or color, and Punta Gorda has debated whether to allow boat canopies at all. Check your city and any HOA rules before adding a canopy.

What lift maintenance costs

A service visit is usually priced as a flat call or by the hour plus parts. Boatzon's 2026 guide puts replacement canopy covers at about $300 to $1,500 and a full canopy frame with cover at about $1,500 to $4,000. See the full cost guide.

Reference figure, not a quote: Boatzon, boat lift cost in 2026, checked November 2026.

A yearly check costs less than one emergency call with the boat stuck up.

Maintenance Plans questions

How often should a boat lift be serviced?

At least once a year in salt water, plus after any storm that put water over the dock.

Should the boat be on the lift during a hurricane?

Follow your lift maker's and insurer's guidance. Many owners remove the boat; if it stays, it should be raised and secured.

Can you check my lift while I'm away?

Many techs service lifts for seasonal owners. Tell us when you're away when you request the estimate.
