Getting to know Fort Myers
Fort Myers grew up around an Army post built on the Caloosahatchee during the Seminole Wars and named for Col. Abraham C. Myers. Thomas Edison built his winter home here in the 1880s, and Henry Ford later bought the house next door; both estates still sit on the river along McGregor Boulevard.
The city counted 86,395 residents in the 2020 census. A Fort Myers mailing address covers a lot more than the city, though: many riverfront and canal homes with that address are in unincorporated Lee County.
Fort Myers waterfront and its lifts
River lots along McGregor Boulevard and the older neighborhoods south of downtown often have long docks reaching out into the Caloosahatchee, with lifts that see wakes, wind and river current. Canal subdivisions further south have shorter docks and smaller lifts.
The river is brackish, so lifts here corrode a little slower than on the open Gulf, but freshwater releases and storm surge push debris and silt into the docks, which is hard on cables and pulleys.

Permits for a Fort Myers boat lift
Inside city limits, permitted lift and electrical work goes through the City of Fort Myers. Fort Myers mailing addresses outside the city go to Lee County, which requires building permits for docks and lifts.
Your parcel decides it: City of Fort Myers Community Development (permitting) at (239) 321-7925, or Lee County Building & Permitting Services at (239) 533-8585. Search the address on the Lee County Property Appraiser site before anyone files.
Repairs to a working lift rarely need a permit. Replacements usually do, and wiring a new circuit down the dock is electrical work that gets inspected. Lee County’s dock and shoreline guide is a useful overview of what reviewers look for.

Fort Myers boat lift questions
Is my Fort Myers address inside the city?
Not always. Many homes with a Fort Myers mailing address are in unincorporated Lee County. The property appraiser's site will show which.
Do river lifts need different cables?
They usually use the same marine stainless cables, but river debris can make pulley checks more important.
Can you service a lift at the end of a long dock?
Yes. Lift techs routinely work at the end of long river docks; it may just take a little longer.
