Getting to know Punta Gorda
Punta Gorda incorporated in 1887 and sits where the Peace River meets Charlotte Harbor. Hurricane Charley hit the city directly in 2004, and much of the waterfront was rebuilt in the years that followed. The city counted 19,471 residents in the 2020 census.
Punta Gorda Isles, south of downtown, is a grid of canals with direct harbor access. Many homes there have city-maintained concrete seawalls, docks with water and power, and lifts sized for larger boats.
What Punta Gorda boat lifts look like
Isles homes often carry 8,000- to 16,000-pound lifts for offshore and sportfishing boats, and some lots are permitted for two lifts. Heavier boats mean more load on motors, gearboxes and cables.
Boat canopies are a topic here: the city has debated whether to allow them, so check current rules before adding one.

Who permits lift work in Punta Gorda
Inside city limits, permits go through the City of Punta Gorda Building Division at the City Hall Annex on Harvey Street. Punta Gorda addresses outside the city, including much of Burnt Store, go to Charlotte County.
Your parcel decides it: City of Punta Gorda Building Division at (941) 575-3324, or Charlotte County Building Construction Services at (941) 743-1201. Search the address on the Charlotte County Property Appraiser site before anyone files.
Most repair visits need no permit. Installing a new lift is different: building offices commonly want plans showing the lift, its capacity and how it ties to the dock or seawall, plus any electrical work. Ask your contractor to pull the permit in their name.
