Lift Repair: what it involves

Most boat lifts on Southwest Florida canals are electric: one or two motors turn a gearbox, the gearbox turns a winder shaft, and stainless cables wrap the shaft to raise a cradle under the hull. Elevator lifts on a seawall work the same way with the motor driving a carriage up a track. Every part in that chain lives in salt air and splash, which is why lifts here need repair far more often than lifts on inland lakes.

A good repair visit works down the chain instead of guessing. Is power reaching the lift, or has the GFCI or breaker tripped? Does the switch or remote close the circuit? Does the motor run, hum or stay silent? Does the gearbox turn the shaft? Are the cables wrapping evenly and riding in their pulleys? The answer usually shows up in the first half hour, and many calls end with a switch, a capacitor or a reset rather than a new motor.

Signs your lift needs a technician

  • The lift won't move when you press the switch or remote
  • It starts, then stops partway up or down
  • One end or one side rises faster than the other
  • Grinding, clicking or a new whine from the motor or gearbox
  • The breaker or GFCI trips every time you run it

Common methods

Power and control checks

The tech starts at the breaker and GFCI, then the switch, remote receiver and wiring at the lift, because a lot of 'dead motor' calls end right there.

Motor and drive testing

Motors, capacitors and gearboxes are tested on the dock so you only pay for the part that failed, not a whole drive you didn't need.

Cable and alignment repair

Uneven or slipping cables are re-wrapped, re-tensioned or replaced, and the cradle is leveled so the boat sits square.

Does lift repair need a permit?

Usually not. Replacing a switch, a capacitor, a motor or a cable on an existing lift is repair work on equipment that's already permitted. If the repair needs a new electrical circuit, a new lift, or work on the dock or pilings, that changes, and the office for your parcel will want a permit. Lift techs who do electrical work need the right Florida license, so check it before work starts.

How a lift repair visit usually goes

  1. Hear the symptomsThe tech asks what the lift did, which way it was moving and whether the boat is up or down.
  2. Check power firstBreaker, GFCI, outlet and the feed to the lift, because nothing runs without them.
  3. Work down the driveSwitch or remote, motor, capacitor, gearbox, shaft and cables, one at a time.
  4. Price the fixYou get the diagnosis and a written price before parts are ordered.
  5. Run it under loadAfter the repair, the tech raises and lowers the lift to confirm it runs level and smooth.

If the boat is stuck up on the lift, don't keep pressing the switch. Repeated starts can burn out a struggling motor.

What lift repair costs

HomeAdvisor's dock repair guide lists boat lift repairs at about $175 to $500, around $340 on average. Jobs that need a new motor, gearbox or full set of cables cost more, and the parts depend on your lift's brand and capacity. See the full cost guide.

Lift Repair questions

Can you get my boat down if the lift is stuck up?

Usually, yes. Techs can often lower a stuck lift by hand or with a temporary drive while the failed part is replaced.

Is it safe to use a lift that's lifting crooked?

No. A crooked lift puts uneven load on cables and beams. Stop using it until it's checked.

Do you work on all lift brands?

The techs we connect you with work on the common SWFL brands and most older lifts. Tell us the brand and capacity if you know them.
