Boat lift work splits into six kinds of job. Most calls are repairs to a lift that still stands straight: a motor or gearbox, a set of cables and pulleys, or the switches, remotes and wiring that tell it what to do. The rest are new lifts, usually after a storm, a bigger boat or a lift that has simply worn out, and the yearly service that keeps the others from happening. Each page below explains what the work involves, the warning signs, what a visit looks like, the permit question and what it tends to cost.

Repair or replace?

Most lift problems are repairable: a capacitor, a switch, a motor, a gearbox, a cable set or a pulley. Replacement starts to make sense when the structure fails (bent or pitted beams, a cracked cradle, rotten or shifted pilings), when the lift is too small for the boat, or when parts for an old brand are no longer made. Ask for both prices in writing.

Not sure which service you need? Describe what the lift is doing and a tech will tell you.
