Getting to know Fort Myers Beach
The Town of Fort Myers Beach covers Estero Island and incorporated in 1995. Hurricane Ian came ashore nearby in September 2022 and the surge swept across the island, destroying many homes, docks and lifts.
Not every Fort Myers Beach mailing address is in the town. The town notes that properties on San Carlos Island and nearby areas have a Fort Myers Beach address but are outside town limits, which matters for permits.
What Fort Myers Beach boat lifts look like
Bay-side homes along the canals off Matanzas Pass and Estero Bay carry most of the island's lifts. Many were rebuilt or replaced after Ian, often with new pilings, so the lift on a given dock might be brand new or a survivor that was patched back together.
Salt spray and open-water wakes here are about as hard on a lift as Southwest Florida gets. Cables, switch boxes and motor housings wear fast.

- New & Replacement Boat Lift Installation
Storm-damaged lifts are still being replaced across the island.
- Boat Lift Motor & Gearbox Replacement
Salt spray shortens motor and gearbox life on the bay side.
- Boat Lift Cable & Pulley Replacement
Open-water exposure rusts cables quickly.
Ask about the pilings, not just the lift
If your dock was rebuilt after Ian, ask the tech to check that the lift is properly fastened to the new pilings and that clearances are right.
Which office handles Fort Myers Beach lift permits
Inside town limits, building permits go through the Town of Fort Myers Beach Building Services at Town Hall. San Carlos Island and other addresses outside the town are permitted by Lee County.
Your parcel decides it: Town of Fort Myers Beach Building Services at (239) 765-0202, or Lee County Building & Permitting Services at (239) 533-8585. Search the address on the Lee County Property Appraiser site before anyone files.
Repairs to a working lift rarely need a permit. Replacements usually do, and wiring a new circuit down the dock is electrical work that gets inspected. Lee County’s dock and shoreline guide is a useful overview of what reviewers look for.

Fort Myers Beach boat lift questions
Is San Carlos Island part of Fort Myers Beach?
No. The town says San Carlos Island has Fort Myers Beach mailing addresses but is outside town limits, so Lee County handles permits there.
My lift survived Ian. Is it safe?
It may be, but surge-flooded motors and switches and shifted pilings should be checked before regular use.
Do you work on condo and marina lifts?
Residential and small shared docks, yes. Tell us the setup when you request an estimate.
