Getting to know Cape Coral
Cape Coral began in 1957, when brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen bought a stretch of the peninsula across the Caloosahatchee from Fort Myers and started selling lots on dredged canals. The city incorporated in 1970 and counted 194,016 people in the 2020 census, making it the largest city in Southwest Florida.
Its canal system runs to more than 400 miles. The canals in the south and southeast reach the Gulf through the river and Matlacha Pass, while much of the north has freshwater canals with no Gulf access. Which kind you're on changes how fast a lift corrodes and what kind of boat sits on it.
Cape Coral waterfront and its lifts
Most Cape Coral canal homes have a seawall, a small dock and an elevator or four-post lift, often on a 1980s to 2000s house. Gulf-access lots tend to carry bigger, heavier boats on higher-capacity lifts. Salt and brackish water eat cables, switch boxes and motor housings faster than the freshwater canals up north.
After Hurricane Ian, a lot of lifts were replaced or rebuilt, so the city now has a mix of brand-new lifts and older ones that rode out the storm. Both need attention: new lifts need their first service, and older ones are often due for motors and cables.

Free EstimateWhat Cape Coral boat owners ask for most
- Boat Lift Repair
With this many lifts, no-lift and half-lift calls are an everyday thing.
- Boat Lift Cable & Pulley Replacement
Brackish Gulf-access canals rust cables and pulleys faster than freshwater ones.
- New & Replacement Boat Lift Installation
Owners upsizing to bigger boats often outgrow the lift that came with the house.
Know which canal you're on
If you're on a freshwater canal north of the Gulf-access lock areas, your lift sees less salt, but your boat may be trailered more. On saltwater canals, plan for cable checks every year.
Permits for a Cape Coral boat lift
Cape Coral issues its own building permits. The city requires permits and a city inspection for docks and boat lifts, and a new or replacement lift goes through the Permitting Services Division at City Hall.
The office to call is City of Cape Coral Permitting Services at City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral, FL 33990, (239) 574-0546.
Repairs to a working lift rarely need a permit. Replacements usually do, and wiring a new circuit down the dock is electrical work that gets inspected. Lee County’s dock and shoreline guide is a useful overview of what reviewers look for.
