Switches & Remotes: what it involves

Between the house panel and the lift motor sits a chain of small electrical parts: a breaker, usually a GFCI, the wiring run down the dock, a switch box or remote receiver, and on many lifts a limit switch that stops the cradle at the top. Every one of them lives in salt air. Corrosion builds on terminals, moisture gets into switch boxes, and remote receivers fail after a few summers in the sun.

These failures look like a dead motor but cost far less to fix. A GFCI that trips the moment the lift starts often means water in a switch box or a chafed wire on the dock. A remote that works only up close points to a weak receiver or antenna. A limit switch that doesn't stop the lift lets the cradle hit the top and strains cables and beams. Work on the wiring itself should be done by someone licensed for electrical work.

Signs of a switch or wiring problem

  • The lift does nothing, but the motor tests fine
  • The GFCI or breaker trips as soon as the lift starts
  • The remote works only from close up, or not at all
  • The lift doesn't stop at the top of its travel
  • Green or white crust on terminals inside the switch box

If the GFCI keeps tripping, don't bypass it. It's protecting you from a shock near the water.

Common methods

Switch and box repair

Corroded switches, contactors and terminals are replaced, and the box is sealed against moisture.

Remote and receiver service

Remotes are re-paired or replaced and receivers are tested or swapped for a weather-rated unit.

Wiring, GFCI and limit switches

Damaged dock wiring is repaired, GFCI protection confirmed, and limit switches adjusted so the lift stops where it should.

Does wiring work need a permit?

Swapping a switch or remote on an existing lift is minor repair. New circuits, new wiring runs down the dock or a new outlet usually need an electrical permit from the building office for your parcel, pulled by a licensed electrical contractor. Charlotte County's dock and boat lift application states that an electrical permit is required for all lifts, outlets and motorized davits.

How a switch and wiring visit usually goes

  1. Check the protectionBreaker and GFCI are tested first and the reason for any trip is tracked down.
  2. Open the switch boxTerminals, contactors and the switch itself are inspected for corrosion and water.
  3. Test the remoteRemote and receiver are tested at distance and re-paired or replaced.
  4. Trace the wiringThe run down the dock is checked for chafing, loose connections and water.
  5. Set the limitsLimit switches are adjusted and the lift is run to the top to confirm it stops.

A cheap cover over the switch box keeps rain and spray out and adds years to the parts inside.

What switch and wiring repairs cost

Most switch, remote and limit switch jobs fall within or near HomeAdvisor's $175 to $500 range for lift repairs. Running new wiring or a new circuit down the dock costs more and usually adds a permit. See the full cost guide.

Switches & Remotes questions

Why does my GFCI trip when I run the lift?

Usually moisture in the switch box or motor, or damaged wiring on the dock. It needs finding, not bypassing.

Can I add a remote to my old lift?

Often, yes. Many older lifts can take an add-on remote receiver. A tech can check what fits yours.

What does a limit switch do?

It stops the lift at the top of its travel so the cradle doesn't hit the beams and overload the cables.
